When she called to cancel
dinner, she offered
no excuse, said that
something had come up,
a phrase that got me
thinking
about the elasticity of truth.
I called her back,
hung up
before she answered,
knowing
that a missed call
can create a fresh truth,
one that begs
to be uncovered.
