America Turns the Lights on (US Election)

The lights go on

And the darkness slips away, from

The podium

The Twitter fuelled hate

The stockpiling of lies, we thought it was too late

But it Brings a better day

Brings a better day

Brings a better day

A tombstone is lifted

And people can now breath

Not suffocating from insanity

And his personal greed

It brings a better day

Brings a better day

Brings a better day

The Bomb App

Bombs are “smart “

They only target foreign skin

I’m sure it will break just a few limbs

And not see an apartment cave in

It will whistle past the Russians,

Saying hi along the way

Give reverence to the Iranians

“Get out of my way “

Bombs are “smart”

They only pinpoint the “exact foreign skin “

But when the families are laid out on a cold hard floor

The breath of life beating no more

Well

“We will have to do better next time

Start those fighter planes”

Let it begin

Again

And again

And again

And again

The Island of the Dead

Under the soft snow of Alabama

They let him hang from a tree

To tell them “no one messes with Mary Lee”

In a classroom 50 miles south they picked on María Guadalupe.

And made her crawl on her knees

At a special school they broke off for tea, went back to their dormitories

And saw Steve Jane and others too burnt to see

In the Island of the dead

They made America cremate again

In the White House he sat petulant and cold

Letting loose

Women to be slapped

Blacks to be murdered

Muslims to be demonized,

"You’re the terrorist Mr Trump"

"You’re the terrorist Mr Trump"

But in the soul of the dead

America was great again

Las Vegas

Gun Controlled

“Gun control ?”

“I controlled it.”

Bought the legal rounds

Bought the bullets screaming loud

The voice of NRA screaming

“That’s what makes America proud”

“Gun controlled

I used it.”

The second amendment

The senators on the hill

The guy who shot to miss and killed

The domestic settled on a hand gun

A boy caught between the cross fire

And now the highest figure

Written in the clouds

Burning at hell’s door

Take away these fire arms

No more.

The Guns Controlled

YOU controlled it

Aftermath  (Sonnet)

Heard shooter, down, and blood, then candle, spree.
Today’s compelling sweetness makes it worse;
Our seeming lean to darkness baffles me:
These acts horrific, repetition's hearse!

Let's sheathe our swords, and listen to small birds;
Note vultures sulking, high on gnarled trees.
Their beaks are how they eat, and never words
That poke and prod like bullets - Pray release!

The challenge now is writing how I feel
While dragging every word with rusted chains
That snarl, beg, delay, repeat – I yield:
Just give us nests with birds, a cleansing rain.

The writer wants to slumber with a dove,
to feel soft wings, no words, consider love.

You’re So God Like (I.S)

Ahead of the pack
Making someone’s fall
Bringing families to their knees
Doing it for Allah ?
No please……………….

You’re so god like

Marching people to death
You can decide who’s worthy
Of life
And who should have …..death

You’re so YouTube

CNN
Your bitter fame
Your moment of gory
It’s not in Allah’s name

only yours

Sleep Walking

Who can sleep
When we’re sleep walking into hell
Your neighbour growing
Fascist views
Planting the seeds of a bitter mess

Who can sleep
When we are sleep walking
Into hell
Whose children
Will next be kicked in groin
because they are “foreign and they smell”

Who can sleep
When the pounder is at the door
You may resist
But it’s too late
Because
Democracy is no more

Revival of Fascism

UKIP IF YOU WANT TO

UKIP

If you want to

Into the jaws of hate

Despise those

Walking on your streets

Carrying on with their normal lives

Turn them into monsters

No human blood inside

UKIP

If you want to

Into the jaws of hate

But don’t  moan …

When they come for you …

DYLAN THOMAS

(on the 100th anniversary of his birth)

And you as hopeless and troubled as I
Hitting the pen and the bottle at the same time

Snug tight in a valley just touching the sky
Words flowed freely, catching the heron
and what it means to be alive.

I first met you when the first red pen brushed my soul
Blue and black came unwanted

I was looking for someone
Who had all the colours inside
and you laid them out before me

spring air the fresh tide and all life’s troubles
that rip us up
in time

Blow up the North

“Mr Cameron we need to destroy our chemical weapons “

can we bring them to your country?”

“Ohh yes sure sure anything to stop this bloody war”

“Ok we will set sail to Dover and maybe a harbour nearby”

“No I have voters there, how about near Liverpool I’m hated there

“But that’s the other side of the country and there maybe loss of life”

“I ‘ll live with it, I’ve already taken most of their lives”

Philip Seymour Hoffman

A good guy gone
When Jackson went I thought “oh dear”
When Houston went I thought “ how sad”
When I saw you’d gone  I thought “ o no”
Not you

You turned every character into life
But you couldn't do it for yourself
No RIP that’s just too cheap
Just thank you for what you left for
Me and you

A Gift X

Waiting in the queue
As far back as the eyes can see
I wait
And wait
To get you something
For all the things you've done for me

Priceless, you gave it free
Held my hand when sadness swept over  me
A smile at the end of a long day.
I’m paying you back in a small way

Waiting in the queue,
Tired after a long day.
Now just a few more paces to go
Imagining your face
Aglow

I say
Thank you ,
For being
You

It’s Black Friday

“For those starving in Africa?”

“For Civil Rights in America ?”

“For those destitute and poor?”

NoNoNo

It’s” International Greed Day”

Open warfare

For a mobile phone

Plasma screen

Anything cut price

You shoppers are obscene

You should be storming the barricades for human rights

But NoNoNo

Carnage, injuries, blood on the floor

I hope  all the goods are faulty

And that one day

You are “passionate”

About  something

Other than

you

'Modern Tart'

Hang up that picture
You
Piece of
Shit
You’ll probably frame that too.

“Look this is one of his earlier works,
It‘s thick and long expressing life’s movement “

Verbal diarrhoea
“Let’s bid for that too”

“Don’t you want to send some money to the Philippines?”
“Oh do they do art too?”
No they’re clinging onto bare life
“Oh well go and take a picture of that
And I will bid for that too”

Hang up “that” picture
You
Piece of
Shit
“You will frame that “

Dressed like Miley Cyrus pouting like Rihanna

Dressed like Miley Cyrus pouting like Rihanna

But barely 13 …

The car door opens to something  obscene

And as is it rambles on for “their” special one

Drinks and candy pass their way

He says she’s beautiful and he’s sure his friends will also think that way

Dressed like Miley Cyrus pouting like Rihanna

But barely thirteen…

She’s left …

like a broken doll

Stripped …

of her childhood

Blow up the pipelines

Blow up the pipelines
They’re driving us mad
It’s like mustard gas is covering our country with
Lies
Riches
Pockets bulging at the seams
While pensioners and the poor rip open their anthrax  ridden fuel bill
Shiver in the corner
Set fire to the bill for warmth
Then  finally ….
Driven mad through fear
Fill their room with gas, and strike…  … .. .

They’re driving us MAD”

F.U.CK GOD

He put the Tories in
Let you die
Let countless lovers walk on by
Don’t throw knees down to Allah
He just walked into a Kenyan mall
Just dropped a few bombs on Christians
Wailing in hell

F.C.UK GOD

 I’m allowed to blaspheme
You never created
Us to rip anyone in two
But so
Many
Scream
“We do it for you”

Sunday review

The week began on a sad note for poetry as the news of the death of Seamus Heaney broke. Caroline Hurley's excellent poem "Salt of Our Earth" paid a great tribute to him in words and images that evoked his life and work perfectly.
John Saunders' poem "Atropine" was Tuesday's poem and said a lot in a few words. The contrast with the death dealing Belladonna plant and the antidote for gas attacks is very well made.
David Mellor's poem "NOT YOU" made a good point on Wednesday about how we can so easily switch off from horrendous events such as the gas attack. The downside of being as well informed about these things is that it is very easy to feel helpless and this leads to turning away .
My own poem for Seamus Heaney "Sláinte" was Thursday's poem. Siobhan raised some good points in the comments.
Carolyn Cornthwaite's poem "How Shalt Thou Kill Me?"
Was Friday's poem and made the point about big nations and their, sometimes, contradictory stances. It is a memorable poem.
Luigi Pagano's poem "Rumpus in Olympus" continued the story of the current business elite who actually seem like criminals, must be a camera trick, eh?
Keep up the submissions folks and have a good week. We have some blossom happening in NZ which is certainly cheering the place up a bit.

NOT YOU

We didn't choose where to die
We didn't think it would be better to walk down your street
Then someone would give a shit and cry.
We were born a long way from you
But flesh clings to our bodies like you

But you see burns on the screen, no screams
No wails of pain it’s not your kids
Not in your backyard missed
Didn't land on your bus stop or bread queue

We didn't choose to be under a plane that dropped
Its load
Just pick up your Tesco’s order and be gone
Like we split in two
