Not Brexit Day

Not Brexit Day

This was the day we were supposed to leave.
Like a toad who has had enough of the sun,
hopping off to the humid shade of a rock.
Instead the toad’s stuck in blazing heat,
letting the people who take control
kill it off with indecision.
Dehydrating on tarmac,
squashed by the passage of time.
Innards splayed in patterns of grit,
because no one could make a decision.

POEMS FOR THE PLANET - Project Fear

Project Fear

A day filled with Friday life
a February blue sky
counting seventeen degrees of sun
absurdly sitting outside,
shining shoes reflecting rays
birds singing happily confused.

I fear the shrubs will bud
and be lost in next week’s frost.
I fear this may Be It,
an early Spring lends to Summer,
March will bring a heatwave,
April May a drought.

By August we’ll have wilted
unable to brush off flies,
the lawn withered and died.
The sea will be upon us,
lapping at the fields
all of Brussels flooded
waste tangled in the trees.

There will be no streets
for the young to march upon
The rich will move back up the hills,
the poor fighting for a home
thirsty and destroyed.

And we will remember
our discomforting pleasure
on this warm winter day
shining shoes outside.

#YOUTHFORCLIMATE!

March One

No registration counts
three thousand pairs of teenage feet
marching, shouting in the street.

Placards flying, faces painted,
sinister masks and shining eyes.
Skipping school to save themselves.

Calling the world to take action.
We, the adults, the ones in charge
are endangering their future.

March Two

Twelve thousand pairs of teenage feet
- my daughter is among them -
hearts explode with love and pride.

My Mighty Girl and her peers
chanting their demands
Change and change and change

                       We Must!

March Three

Forty thousand this week gone.
On and on and on they go,
election year, we have to listen.
Crummy men in boring suits
challenged by the young.

Future coming faster every year.
Ice caps melt, tension foments,
Arctic battles loom.
Heat waves a danger now,
water low and disappearing.

March and march and march my friends
the planet needs you to defend!

The Rise of the Right

After crashing banks spat
people out of jobs into gutters
austerity normalised dissent.
People in poverty lost hope.
Distant and unreachable,
the wealthy found too easily that
responsibility means nothing.

Blame burns on the streets.
See him the man in a dress,
his son took my job.
He takes my money.
My State, my money, my country.

Nordic cold bites, but he doesn’t feel.
He doesn’t see the snowflakes fall
like the dust that didn’t settle.
A mound of sand sticky with blood,
rings attached to a finger, detached.
Explosions rock the ceiling, a hand in his bag.
His eyes close on his father’s head rolling away.
Father, my father, his heart contracts
cries pain all over the floor.

Snow falls, hope is lost
to the young men who lear.
He’d go but his son has a job,
he’d go but his daughter is young.

The Far Right rises against him,
and fallen snow flies.

Collusion

Hope seeps out

of the screen.

To pray –

if that
is what
it is

- that this will be

the time.

The crime

of the highest order,

after groping women
raping the planet and
locking up children.

Colluding with

evil

to get him elected

will finally
finally
be the thing

that brings him down.

We hope.

The Devil’s Pact

Shaking hands with evil

seeps into the weak,

burning morals and compassion

screwing people’s lives

Lives of people fleeing

violence, poverty, shame.

People looking for new beginnings,

people looking for security.

Human beings

who know how to love

who protect their children

who want the world to be better

who risk destablising lives

who reach the borders of hope

and are arrested

torn from their children

thrown in cages

sent back alone

waiting for their children

whose lives must no longer contain any hope

because others shook hands with evil.
