Maybe...

Maybe...

Maybe someone listened
when we shouted out in rage,
maybe someone understood
the words upon the page.
Maybe someone listened
when the world found its voice,
maybe now their leaders know
their people have a choice.
Maybe fear and loathing
will no longer rule the day…
maybe now their citizens
will be proud to say they’re gay.

Maybe...

That Was the MUSE That Was

POETree

From tiny haikus,
great epics grow.
Sprouting little limericks,
tendril lines emerge,
formed from verdant words:
each of them
composed of divergent DNA -
Re-arrange the letters
and different species
are born.
AND.
DAN.
See?

Sapling stanzas grow thick,
create fingerling
branches,
burgeon into
canopy crowns.
The years turn into decades,
turn into centuries.
The once-sharp edged leaves
tatter,
and fall,
replaced by new growth,
and the previously relevant

becomes elegiac.

Queer

Sticks and stones
will break your bones
in the Kingdom
of Brunei.

Sticks and stones
will break your bones
when you kiss
another guy.

Reason dies,
compassion cries
when the law
goes Sharia.

Not the place
to show your face
when accused

of being queer.

Truly Awesome

It’s a sad, sad day
for broken Britain,
no end in sight,
no postscript written.
The MPs fight
amongst themselves
as shoppers plan
for empty shelves.

It’s fucked up
on a national scale,
a truly awesome
megafail.

The Tories couldn’t
catch the clap
in a backstreet brothel
in the Watford Gap
and the Labour lot
are even worse
and seem to be
success averse.

It’s fucked up
on a national scale,
a truly awesome
megafail.

Half the country’s
gone alt right,
much to Farages
delight,
the rest have
lost the will to live,
and have no more
to fucking give.

It’s fucked up
on a national scale,
a truly awesome

megafail.

An insignificant man

An insignificant man

Flying from the
bombs and bullets
that destroyed
their home,
they made
their home
in New Zealand.
One year later,
they are buried,
forever now
in New Zealand.
Not the victims
of racism,
or intolerance,
or Islamaphobia,
but the victims
of a small,
insignificant

man.

Noticeboard

‘...bacon, honey,
jam and bread’,
crossed off the list
kept in my head,
paid my bill
and gathered all,
then glanced
upon the foodstore wall.
A pencilled note,
torn from a pad,
announced to all,
vaccines were bad,
that mums were wrong
to take a chance,
they should refuse,
take up a stance
against those foolish doctors.

I watched the folks,
as they read the note
and made a copy -
quote...unquote.
They pinned theirs up,
across the wall,
repeated lies
in hasty scrawl -
others read
and copied on,
and added to the lie.

It wasn’t long
‘til kids got ill,
spread it round
and still
the lie went on.
People read
again the note,
cast their stones
and cast their vote.
Lots of likes,
lots of sharing,
little thought,
little research daring
to go against the flow.

The lies refuse
to go away...
the echo chamber’s
here to stay.

Here is the news...

Here is the news...

Here is the news.
A baby died today.
Also dead are
reason,
compassion,
tolerance
and forgiveness.
Survivors include
racism,
arrogance,
narrow-mindedness
and ugliness.

And now, back to the studio.

The New Suffragettes ♀

Get out of our way,

we're the New Suffragettes.

We drink what we want

and we smoke cigarettes,

we don't want soft words

and gold statuettes.

We take what we want,

we're the New Suffragettes.

We won't bow to pressure

or masculine threats.

We won't have remorse

or gender regrets

and we stand proud together,

both blondes and brunettes.

We take what we want,

we're the New Suffragettes.

Don't think that we owe you,

we've paid all our debts.

We take what we want,

we're the New Suffragettes.

Targets

People are stupid,
and act in a way
that shouldn’t be sanctioned
or allowed go astray,
but putting up targets
of young womens’ faces
brings down our ethics
and brings us to places
where I would rather not be.

If you condemn them
as wrong,
you cannot take actions
that would really belong
in the faction you claim to oppose.
She may have supported
and been the young wife
of a terrorist fighter,
who wrongly took life,
but then don’t do the things that he did.

We’re meant to be better,
we treat them as evil...
then go and act
like we’re still medieval.

Shame on them.

Shame on us.

That Was the MUSE That Was

Poetry Narcosis

I don’t smoke tobacco,
I don’t drink much no more,
but when it comes to the writing,
I’m an out and out whore.
Like chasing the dragon,
or doing a line,
the addiction of writing
is the addiction of mine.
I crave the attention,
the comments, the praise,
the rush of adrenalin
when crafting a phrase,
and when I’m away
from the keyboard or screen,
the withdrawal effects
are simply obscene.
That monkey’s a bitch,
he’s right on my back,
he’s feeding me juice,
he’s dealing me crack.
I wish it was easy
to just disavow-
and the worst thing about it?

I’m doing it now...

POEMS FOR THE PLANET - HOPEless

HOPEless

I’ve lost what little hope I had
in the entire human race,
and see a desperate future
writ large upon its face.
We’ve reached a certain point
upon the arc of evolution,
where progress made along the way
is enveloped in pollution.
We’ve done the damage,
like as not,
and our inner urge
to improve our lot
is balanced by
the innate rot
that spreads through every nation.

My oldest child
of fourteen years
sums up my
unintended fears,
asking why
he sees and hears
the nightly news reports.

I find it hard
to answer him,
to answer why
the picture’s grim
and hopes of rescue
seem so slim,
as my vision so distorts.

The earth will carry on and turn,
and continue on its course,
species still will rise and fall
and we will just endorse
the selfishness of
modern man,
doing what the hell we want,
believing that we can.
We started out
with cold stone tools,
and because we are
such stone-cold fools
we’ll end up
where the savage rules,
right where we began.

Glue

Children are faceless,
faceless on Facebook,
glued to the screen,
old at the age of thirteen.
Cyber bully, internet troll,
taking over self-control.
You’re hooked -
Facebooked.
You’ve been online
since you were nine
and now your life is in decline.
Still glued to the screen,
a wreck at the age of fourteen.
You starve yourself,
you’re on the shelf,
slicing at your arm.
You don’t know why,
you don’t get high,
addicted to self-harm.
Forever glued to the screen,
dead at the age of fifteen.

LOVE is in the NEWS - Love Enjambment

Love Enjambment

People love poetry -
now its official.
Books judged by their cover,
shocked by the initial
lighting of fire,
the fanning of flames,
the rushing desire
for absorbing of names,
the aching and yearning
to capture and hold
the letters italic,
sans serif
and bold.

Give me a book
over the female form -
fill it with verse
and I’ll whip up a storm
that engulfs my heart
and keeps me warm
on the coldest of

cold winter nights.

An Atheist's Prayer

So it’s down to God
that we have Trump:
perhaps He went
and got the hump,
thought we deserved
the monstrous lump
that heads the American nation.

Perhaps He’s right,
perhaps we strayed,
ate the fruit
and so betrayed
the perfect world
that He once made,
the immaculate conception.

Atheistic -
I might be;
agnostic -
I’d agree,
but if You’re up there,
hear my plea -

implement his resignation.

Thirty Second News

Thirty Second News

A thirty second slot
on the TV news
pointed out the match
by the nuclear fuse -
America pulls out
of the missile ban,
media treating news
as only media can:
a full five minutes
on a celebrity royal,
giving out food
wrapped in celebrity foil,
writing her words
on soon-decayed fruit,
while the TV news
debase and dilute -
as Mulder said,
‘the truth is out there’,
the truth, it seems,

is that we just don’t care.

Blood

Much blood spilt
in the name of God -
spilled still
by women
now.

A cycle created
to appease
a pope,
creating unwanted births,
avoidable deaths,
period poverty
and menstruation
myths.

And don’t forget
the VAT...

Star Farce

Darth Trump’s Star Force
on its way,
his Death Star’s
called the USA,
stormtroopers
in the CIA,
the Empire’s striking back.

Aliens of
an illegal kind
are buried deep
within his mind,
fear and loathing
both entwined,
he plans his next attack.

With Federal workers
unemployed,
the Death Star
heads into the void,
perhaps Darth
is a faulty ‘droid,
snackin’ on a Mac.

He said he’d build
a fortress wall,
he’d like to be
just like Darth Maul,
I hope one day
he’s gonna fall,
he’s gonna get the sack.

An Astronauts T-shirt

China’s growing cotton
on the dark side of the moon.
They’re hoping their potatoes
will begin their sprouting soon,
and silkworms now are sleeping
within their small cocoon.

The cotton’s meant for clothing,
an astronauts t-shirt,
and potatoes grown for mashing,
plucked from lunar dirt,
while silkworms breathe out CO2,
make the climate less inert.

The terraforming’s started
in the Chinese bio-sphere,
the new crops being harvested
by the robot engineer.
