someone has a card
to fit your mood
a dollar fifty
snail-mail
or e-

amorous dollars
transatlantic euros
pound signs for the eyes
the ticket-price of love
not love itself

hopefuls
in the friend zone
in the place of love
displaced
close but
no embraces
never enough
closeness
no cigars
no chocs

consumers
in the money zone
in gold we trust
will you still feed me
I know you won’t
need me
money can’t buy me
a better class
of friend

70 bucks
fizz and fun
it’s that money thing
eat out your hearts
two as cheap as one
who loves you baby
my girl lollipop
hey big spender
that’s the way to do it
money for nothing

Malice aforethought

Beware you perverts:
we know your intent.
We'll kick you hard
if we ever find
you send a card
on Valentine's Day
with deceit in mind .
It is, like cold calling,
a form of harassment.
Women have felt
that such an action
is below the belt
but they're not falling
for your dirty tricks
and if you try anything
you'll be hit for six.
The ball's in your court
so be a good sport
don't throw it their way.

At Glasgow’s Charing Cross a woman stops

and shows her child the moon

a bright  yello globe in an indigo sky.

In a muted restaurant with worn out chairs

and formica tables, a man eats alone.

In a Dublin hospital the woman says 

‘I’ll have the operation without anesthetic 

                         as long as my baby is safe’.

In Auschwitz, Primo Levi observes his birthday

with parcels of bread  and hoarded scraps of paper.

I’m struggling on the hill, you take my pack

                                               and carry us both home.

People love poetry -

now its official.

Books judged by their cover,

shocked by the initial

lighting of fire,

the fanning of flames,

the rushing desire

for absorbing of names,

the aching and yearning

to capture and hold

the letters italic,

sans serif 

and bold.

Give me a book

over the female form - 

fill it with verse

and I’ll whip up a storm

that engulfs my heart

and keeps me warm

on the coldest of 

cold winter nights.
